This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
