Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
